One of the defining traits of the millennial generation is that everyone seems to have at least three jobs. This employment surfeit is usually characterized as some sort of moral failure – after all the two adjectives most commonly used to describe millennials are “lazy” and entitled” – rather than the result of economic instability and the changing nature of the workplace. But Katie Nehra makes having three jobs look damn good. Nehra juggles the titles of fashion designer, actor and screenwriter. She co-wrote the 2014 feature film Alex of Venice, played Anna Kendrick’s best friend in Mr. Right, and is founder/designer of the offbeat athleisure brand, Nehra Simone.

I’m interviewing Nehra at the Mercer Hotel in the midst of New York Fashion Week about her new label, which launched in 2018, but naturally, considering the expansive scope of Nehra’s life, the conversation spreads much further than that.

“It’s funny, because when I first said I wanted to do a clothing line, so many people were like, ‘Oh you’ve quit acting?’ And now  no one even asks,” she says. One of the main reasons she chooses to pursue three disparate careers is because: “If you stop living in the world you’re not going to have any stories to tell,” she says.

“Doing [multiple things], you’re going to come across so many different characters, especially in the fashion industry, that it definitely lends itself to an experience you might bring to an acting role – probably an emotional meltdown one,” she laughs.

It also nets you cool friends who are willing to star in your lookbooks: Nehra managed to rope Michael K. Williams a.k.a. Omar from The Wire into appearing in the Nehra Simone SS18 lookbook, shot by uber-hip, Ryan McGinley acolyte, Sandy Kim.

But designing clothes isn’t all Devil Wears Prada and diva-esque behaviour for Nehra. Rather, she says, “with clothes, you are telling a story and you’re sort of lending your story to someone for their life.” What kind of a story does Nehra Simone tell? “It’s very clear to me that [the collection] is saying, you should go with your gut. Don’t be afraid to say what you want and who you are,” she says. “I hope that these clothes can help give someone that confidence that they don’t have already.”

Nehra first started designing in 2007, for the same cliché reason that many designers start their own lines: because they couldn’t find anything they wanted to wear. But Nehra’s style direction has evolved worlds in the past decade and she decided to transition her line of cocktail dresses, Simone, into the more low-key Nehra Simone in 2018. “I used to be that girl that wanted to put a dress on and [now] that’s just not me,” she says. She privileges comfort above all else in her designs, which is reflected in Nehra Simone’s tagline, “99% leisure. 1% athletic.” Her new line is comprised of logo-heavy sweat suits, retro bombers and leather hoodies. “I pride myself on being a real texture freak. I want everything to feel good and yummy getting in it.”

It follows that if you look good and feel good then you’ll be able to accomplish great things, but Nehra cautions against overextending yourself. “A big lesson I learned is that you can probably do less than you think well in a day,” she says. “I always think I have all this time and then I really had to take a step back and ask, ‘How much can I get accomplished in a day.’”

She also says her secret to success has to do with being able to hyper-focus. The ability to give your full-concentration to a particular task and then switch gears and do the exact same thing with another task is a rare skill set that Nehra considers crucial to what she does. But, most importantly, and perhaps not the most encouraging thing she says is: “I think most people that are doing numerous things do not need a lot of sleep.”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 11 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

1. What makes you a strong person?

I think I’m a pretty strong person, just because when I’m on, I can take on a lot of things, like tasks and emotional things, but my strength can be very up or down, if I’m honest. I wish I could say that I’m a strong @ss kicker all the time, but I definitely have my moments when I have to lean on other people, like my friends, my family and my cat…although every single time I cry to Tabs, he looks sympathetic for maybe 30 seconds, and then I get the sense that he just wants me to feed him…

Basically, he’s only there for the snacks.

2. What are the parts you rush through when you’re doing your makeup?

These days, it doesn’t matter how much time I have to do my makeup, whether it’s five minutes, 15 minutes or half an hour (which would be a total luxury), I speed through my brows…because sh*t is boring, OK?

Water. It makes up 71 per cent of the earth’s surface and up to 60 per cent of our bodies. Aside from oxygen, there’s nothing we need more to survive. And according to researchers at the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut, it may also make us happier.

Numerous studies have found that water has the power to improve our personal lives. One study they found that women who were mildly dehydrated after a workout reported mood changes, poor concentration and headaches. Others have found that water can help us lose weight: scientists at Humboldt University of Berlin measured people’s metabolic rate after they drank 500 millilitres of water, and noticed an increase in the rate within 10 minutes.

But hydration doesn’t just help your insides — its effects are visible. Water plays a vital role in the function of every organ in your body, including your skin. Your skin is 64% water, and just like the other organs in our bodies, skin is made up of cells that rely on water to function.

So if you’re after dewy skin, strong workouts and overall happiness, H2O will help you get there. Here’s everything you need to know about water, and our top tips for keeping healthy and hydrated.

Nourish

Staying hydrated isn’t just about drinking eight glasses of water a day. Approximately 20 per cent of your daily H2O intake comes from the food you eat. Try quenching your thirst with a handful of blueberries (85 per cent water), carrots (88 per cent water) or cauliflower (92 per cent water).

Glow

Drink eight 250-millilitre glasses of water each day to prevent your skin from being dry, tight and flaky. (Dry skin is less resilient and more prone to wrinkling.)

Skincare starts from within — but it also start with how you hydrate your face. An extra-hot shower may feel good, but it can strip away natural oils, leaving your skin feeling dry and more sensitive. Like most things in life, moderation is key — and so is thinking ahead. Moisturizing immediately after you shower will prevent the dry air from leaching moisture from your skin. And when you do reach for a product, make sure it has hyaluronic acid (ha), one of the hero ingredients in skincare. It holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which means it’s a powerful natural moisturizing ingredient.

TOP TIP: For ultra-hydrated skin, here are a few of the products you should be reaching for.

 

Sweat

Just by breathing, you lose an average of 250 millilitres of water each day. If you work up a sweat, you lose even more. After a one-hour workout, you can lose several litres of water. Here are three signs you may be dehydrated:

  1. You feel tired and sluggish when you start your workout.
  2. You have cramps. Drink 30 millilitres of water for every 10 pounds of body weight one to two hours before you work out.
  3. Your resting pulse rate may be higher than normal for you.

If you’re a wake-up-and-work-out kind of person, hydration is even more important. You’ve just awakened from an eight- to 10-hour fast, so your body needs to be refuelled!
