Celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta is no stranger to red carpets. As a go-to MUA for A-listers like Bella and Gigi Hadid, Shay Mitchell, Emily Ratajowski, Olivia Munn, and so many more, he knows how to make the most beautiful celebs in the world look even more glam than usual during awards season.
And Ta is no stranger to FASHION, either. Last summer, we spent the afternoon with him and Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell, as Ta got Mitchell ready for the MMVAs. The 27-year-old makeup artist also did the bold makeup for our September 2017 beauty shoot starring Judith Maria Bradley (we highly recommend taking a look at that shoot here, if you’re unfamiliar).
So when we found out that Ta would be doing Disney star Sofia Carson’s makeup for the Oscars red carpet tonight, we knew we had to talk to him. 24-year-old Carson (who you probably know for her role in Descendants) hosted the 2018 Oscars All Access Live Stream. We hopped on the phone with Ta, as Carson hit the Oscars 2018 red carpet, to find out all about her glam tonight, which Ta created using KISS Lashes and KISS NY Professional makeup.

On how Sofia’s dress influenced her makeup
“Sofia had two different dresses that she was torn between. They were both red, so we originally were going to go with a red lip to match, but we thought it was too expected so we went with something more subdued, natural and effortless. She wanted the look to be all about the dress. She wore this Giambattista Valli dress that was very different for her. It made her look very mature and elegant. So we thought a red lip would have been too much.”
How to get the look
“Sofia has great features so we never want to put too much on. I always try to focus on skin so I did it super natural. Then I applied a bit of contour. She loves contour—we used KISS NY Pro Contour Palette in “Medium.”
For highlighter we used Kiss New York Professional Halo Strobing Palette in Light. For blush we used a shade called “Baring Bare,” which is very similar to her lip colour. When I choose lip and cheek combos I always make sure they’re in the same colour family. When they’re different, the look isn’t harmonious and it doesn’t look complete. And I used the blush on her eyes as well, just to bring the look together.
The lip is Kiss New York Professional Luxe Creamy Lip Gloss in “Bailey’s Vanilla.” It’s a super creamy lip gloss. She didn’t want a matte lip this year because she knew she was going to be talking a lot and she wanted her lips to be moisturized.
I always play up the eyes a bit more on the red carpet. I think lashes are super important. There are so many lights, so when the flash hits, it makes lashes look even lighter, so they’re a must. It doesn’t have to be crazy, but even just a natural strip are necessary. I actually used the same lashes on Sofia as last year (KISS Lash Couture Triple Push-Up Collection lashes in “Bustier”) because she loved them and even saved them and took them to Paris Fashion Week with her.”
On the vibe of award show days
“I just love award show days. I think they’re so much fun and everyone’s so excited in the glam world. We all just want beautiful photos and for our clients to feel beautiful. Everyone usually works with someone they’ve worked with before so it’s smooth sailing. Award shows are my favourite part of my job because everyone dresses more glam than they normally would, and we just want to make our clients look their most beautiful.”
The makeup trend Patrick’s loving right now
“My favourite makeup trend right now is violet. It’s so in right now, whether it’s in your blush or in your eyeshadow, I think that’s such a beautiful colour.”
